The Sampler
Something that you can draw out of this piece in particular is the sampler. Katie wardrobe has a great tutorial series on this, see link down in the description below. She does a lot of great PD and she does a demo with the sampler and it’s a fantastic intro for students to get to know what sampling is. In the case of heat waves we can hear that there is a low registered vocal sample. This sampler is great as a one shot so it’s best to just record a word or two rather than a sentence and drop in where you would like it in the arrangement. There are a whole bunch of stock samples that you can play around with but let’s have a go at creating a vocal sample.
To edit the sample there are a few key settings. We have the mod and pitch wheels, and we can do cool things like reverse the sample really easily. We can change the ADSR and then from there we can use the keyboard to play the sample at different pitches. A drawback here is that pitch and tempo are linked, so lower sounds will be slower and higher sounds will be faster. When I’m working on a sample I like to solo the track by tapping on the mixer button at the top and click the headphones on the sampler track. This is a great idea for students to get in the habit of doing, particularly when they are crafting their sound.
The Mixer
We’ve also got the mixer to play around with. Down the bottom there we've got the master effects with the triangle and so it’s just important to be aware that these apply over the whole piece and so there's some really interesting and clever ones in there like master echo and your master reverbs. We can see that there's the 60s echo effect if you wanted to take it retro, there's a rock and roll one in there as well and this is the sort of thing that this is high level stuff. If we start to try to explain all of it then we'd be here in 5 years time so let's not but we can say there you are students it's available for you. Something to be aware of though is setting sound levels for each instrument. In track view you can literally drag it from where the instrument pictures are and it gives you your volume faders to get your balance right.
See you in the next one.
