There's a bunch of affordances in GarageBand that we need to come to grips with in order to realise this piece. We’ve put them all on our Canvas Course so let’s have a look. We always set up our projects with a little blurb and in this blurb we try to link a few resources so that the students can go deeper in their own time. In this case they can learn more about triple j, Australia day, watch the glass animals heatwave video and find the full list of hottest 100 songs. Each one of these buttons down here gives us a step by step scaffold to fully realise our piece. Just by the titles we get a bird’s eye view of the scaffold that’s in place.
So the first step is to get into the groove. Here we start off by learning about how to make a drum groove in GarageBand. As we're inspired by heat waves we've constructed some flipped learning resources. And actually there's lots of ways to create a drum groove and so we've provided three different approaches that you might like to take.
The next thing that happens in the song is the bass line comes in - the ph fat bass line. So we've got a resource here which teaches you how to create a bass line. Once you have a beat and some bass then it’s time to add some harmony and melody and then from there you can utilise some really neat features in GarageBand to efficiently build out your composition into a fully realised hot hit.
