Transcript:

So the first thing we should do is listen to the track. This is where we draw out the elements of the drum groove from Heat Waves and use them as inspiration for our beat. It gives us a great platform to explain the basic backbeat by listening to the hi hat, clap/snare on the back beat and quite a simple bass drum pattern. So we are guiding the students towards recreating something or not recreating but creating something that's inspired by heatwaves. As we are doing the guided listening we want the drum groove in the back of our mind and rather than putting that up front and teaching “hey students i'm going to teach you about the concepts of music”, we can flip it and say here's a piece of music, “what can we take from it?”. In the description below we’ve provided a link to a guided listening template that you can use for your students. We’ve also provided a link to the official lyric video for ‘Heat Waves’ by Glass Animals, so let’s take a moment to access the guided listening template and listen to the track by clicking the links we’ve provided.
