So let’s lay down some harmony and melody.

We’ve got our drum groove, we’ve got our bass line, and we can now duplicate it to create our third section to lay down some harmony. In the description below we’ve provided a link to a guided listening template that you can use for your students. We’ll be using the completed version to speed things up today. We’ve also provided a link to the official lyric video for ‘Heat Waves’ by Glass Animals, so let’s now pause this video and follow the links in the description, taking note of what’s happening with the harmony.

Great so we can hear a few things to get inspiration from. Firstly we have a pad sound that's emulating the bass guitar and then you've got a vocal riff and the hum of an organ sound in the middle.

It’s important to point out to the students the difference between lead, pad and bass that tend to be the three categories of synthesizer that we encounter. Also that each one of them tends to have a different job to do. Students can get into a pickle if they have chosen a lead sound and they’re trying to play chords. Often those sounds are monophonic and so that's a good opportunity to talk about monophonic versus polyphonic. This also provides a quick history lesson cos back in the day synthesizers could only play one sound at a time. Lot’s of opportunities here for the teacher to bring in context to what they are seeing in the app.
